Metal D Sub Hoods & Backshells - Northern Technologies, DTZK & D45ZK Series, UK Stock
We stock eight metal D Sub hoods, also known as metal D Sub backshells, from Northern Technologies and other specialist manufacturers. Our range covers four cable exit configurations: straight (top entry) screw-together hoods in the DTZK and C88E000 series, 45° screw-together hoods in the D45ZK series, 90° right-angle hoods in the N30E9 and N88E series, and top-entry hoods with internal cable clamp in the DM (nickel) series. The DTZK-BK series provides the same straight-entry screw-together configuration in a black anodised finish. All are zinc alloy or nickel-plated zinc alloy construction, providing maximum EMI/RFI shielding and mechanical durability for industrial, broadcast, medical, and defence applications. Available 9-way to 50-way.
Our Metal D Sub Hood Series at a Glance
DTZK Series: Metal Screw-Together, Straight Entry
Standard straight (top-entry) screw-together metal hood. Zinc alloy, nickel-plated. Available in DE-9, DA-15, DB-25, DC-37, and DD-50 shell sizes. The most widely specified metal D Sub hood for general-purpose shielded cable assemblies. Available in standard (silver) finish and black anodised finish (DTZK-BK series) for installations where colour coding or aesthetics matter.
C88E000 Series (Northern Technologies) – Straight Entry Metal Hood
Northern Technologies C88E000 series straight-entry metal hoods – the same application as the DTZK but from Northern Technologies. Part numbers include C88E000207, C88E000209, C88E000211, C88E300000, C88E340000. If you have searched for one of these specific part numbers, this is the product page. Available in sizes covering 9-way through 50-way connectors.
DM Series: Top Entry, Nickel, With Internal Cable Clamp
Nickel-finish top-entry metal hood with integrated internal cable clamp. The internal clamp grips the cable jacket inside the hood, providing strain relief without an external clamping plate, resulting in a neater external appearance. Specified where a flush rear profile is preferred or where the cable entry needs to be sealed against the hood body. Available in DE-9 through DD-50 sizes (£1.80 – £3.05).
D45ZK Series: Metal Screw-Together, 45° Cable Exit
45° exit screw-together metal hood. The angled cable exit reduces the depth of the assembled connector behind a panel face, routes the cable away from the connector at a natural angle, and reduces mechanical stress at the cable termination point. The most common choice for panel-mounted D Sub connectors in space-constrained control cabinet and rack-mount applications. Available in DE-9 through DD-50 shell sizes (£1.83 – £2.90).
N30E9 Series (Northern Technologies) – Metal, 90° Right-Angle Exit
Northern Technologies N30E9 series 90° right-angle metal hoods. The cable exits parallel to the connector face, routing along the panel surface rather than away from it. Used where the cable must run horizontally along the panel or where vertical clearance behind the connector is severely restricted. Part numbers include N30E900000, N30E910000, N30E920000, N30E930000L. Available in DE-9, DB-25, and DC-37 sizes (£4.02 – £6.68).
N88E420000 (Northern Technologies) – Metal, 90° Right-Angle, 25-Way
Single-item 90° right-angle metal hood for DB-25 (25-way) connectors. Part number N88E420000. Available individually at £3.60 + VAT. If you searched for “northern technologies n88e420000” – this is the product.
CCOV-MEL Series – Economy Top Entry Metal Hood
Economy-range top-entry metal hood for cost-sensitive applications where EMI shielding is required but a premium-series hood is not specified. Available in DE-9 and DA-15 sizes (£3.65 – £4.55 + VAT). Same application as the DTZK series at a lower unit cost; specify DTZK for higher-grade industrial use.
DTZK-BK Series – Black Anodised Metal Screw-Together Hood
The DTZK-BK is the black-finish equivalent of the DTZK series, same zinc alloy screw-together construction, straight entry, same size range (DE-9 through DD-50), but in a black anodised finish. Used for colour-coded cable assemblies, consumer-facing equipment where a black connector aesthetic is preferred, and broadcast applications where silver metal connectors are visually undesirable. Available in the same price range as the DTZK series (£1.94 – £3.00 + VAT). This is the only black metal D Sub hood currently available in UK distributor stock.
Metal Sub-D Hoods & Backshells: Superior Durability and EMI/RFI Shielding for D-Sub Connectors
In the realm of electrical connectors, durability and protection from electromagnetic interference/radio-frequency interference (EMI/RFI) are key considerations. Metal Sub-D hoods are purpose-built to address these concerns and offer superior durability and shielding capabilities for D-Sub connectors. These hoods provide a robust solution for a wide range of applications, ensuring reliable performance and protection against external interference.
What are Metal Sub-D Hoods?
Metal Sub-D hoods are protective enclosures designed to fit over D-Sub connectors. D-Sub connectors, also known as D-Subminiature connectors, are widely used in various industries for their versatility in transmitting data, signals, and power. Metal Sub-D hoods are crafted from zinc alloy or nickel-plated zinc alloy, providing a dense, shielded enclosure that withstands the mechanical demands of industrial and professional applications. Typically, they are applied in military and aerospace technology, industrial automation, telecommunications, and other sectors where EMI/RFI shielding is crucial.
Advantages of Using Metal D Sub Hood
- Enhanced Durability: One of the key benefits of metal Sub-D hoods is their enhanced durability. The metal construction ensures that these hoods can withstand the rigours of demanding environments. They are resistant to high temperatures, mechanical stress, physical impact, and other forms of wear and tear. This durability makes them especially valuable in industrial and heavy-duty applications.
- Exceptional EMI/RFI Shielding: In addition to their durability, metal Sub-D hoods offer another significant advantage: electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) shielding. In today’s digital age, where numerous devices often operate in close proximity, EMI and RFI can disrupt signal transmission and degrade the performance of your connectors. By using metal Sub-D hoods, you can effectively shield your connectors from these interferences, ensuring clear and strong signal transmission.
- Ensuring Strain Relief: Like all Sub-D hoods, metal versions also provide strain relief. They hold the cable firmly to the connector, preventing sharp bends that could lead to pin damage or signal loss. This support enhances the longevity and reliability of your D-Sub connectors, ensuring they continue to perform optimally.
- Better and More Secure Fit: Metal Sub-D hoods are designed to provide a secure fit over D-Sub connectors, ensuring they remain in place, even in challenging conditions. This characteristic eliminates the risk of unintended disconnections.
Choosing the Right Metal Sub-D Hood
Metal Sub-D hoods come in a variety of sizes to fit different D-Sub connectors, ranging from 9-pin to 50-pin configurations. When selecting a metal Sub-D hood, consider the size of your connector, the type of metal used, and the specific requirements of your application.
With their enhanced durability and exceptional EMI/RFI shielding capabilities, Metal Sub-D hoods ensure your connectors can deliver reliable performance, even in challenging environments. Investing in metal Sub-D hoods is a practical step towards maximising the efficiency and lifespan of your electrical systems.
