Metplas D Sub Hoods & Backshells - Metallised Plastic, Northern Technologies & CAMS Series, UK Stock

Metplas D Sub hoods, also called metallised plastic D Sub backshells, are ABS thermoplastic hoods with a conductive copper-over-nickel coating applied to the interior surfaces. This coating provides EMI/RFI shielding comparable to full metal hoods at lower cost and lighter weight, making Metplas the most widely specified backshell material in commercial electronics, telecommunications, and standard industrial automation. We stock seven Metplas hood configurations across four series: the CAMS series (9, 15, and 25-way in 45° and straight entry), Northern Technologies C88E2 (45° Metplas), Northern Technologies C88E3 (straight Metplas), OS-DTPMK (straight screw-together), and a general 45° screw-together range. All are available from 9-way to 50-way depending on the series.

What Is Metplas? – Metallised Thermoplastic Explained

Metplas is a proprietary term for metallised thermoplastic, ABS plastic with a conductive copper-over-nickel electroless plating applied to the internal cavity surfaces. The metallic coating makes the interior of the hood electrically conductive, allowing it to function as a continuous EMI/RFI shield around the connector’s rear termination and cable entry. This is the same shielding principle as a metal hood, achieved at lower material cost and with a lighter finished assembly weight than zinc alloy.

Why Choose Metplas Over Metal or Plain Plastic?

Metplas provides comparable EMI/RFI shielding to zinc alloy metal hoods at lower unit cost and lighter weight. Choose full metal where the application specification explicitly requires metal construction (aerospace, military, high-mechanical-abuse environments). Choose Metplas for standard industrial, commercial, and broadcast applications where shielding is required but full metal is not mandated.
Plain plastic hoods (uncoated ABS or nylon) provide cable strain relief and physical protection but no EMI/RFI shielding. Choose Metplas whenever the connector assembly is part of a shielded cable run or when the application requires shielded construction. Choose plain plastic only for unshielded general-purpose wiring in benign environments.

Our Metplas Hood Series

CAMS Series: Metplas Hoods in Fixed Shell Sizes

The CAMS series covers fixed-size Metplas hoods in 9-way (CAMS09-K, top entry, £2.38), 15-way (CAMS15-K, 3-way entry, £2.87), and 25-way (CAMS25-K, 3-way entry, £3.16). The “3-way entry” designation on the CAMS15-K and CAMS25-K means the hood body accommodates cable entry from three directions, straight (top), left-angled, and right-angled, without requiring orientation-specific installation, giving more flexibility in confined cable routing situations. The CAMS09-K uses a standard straight top entry.

C88E2 Series (Northern Technologies) – Metplas, 45° Exit

Northern Technologies C88E2 series 45° exit Metplas hoods. Available in DE-9 through DD-50 sizes (£1.55–£1.99). The 45° exit reduces the depth of the assembly behind a panel face and provides natural cable strain relief at an angle. The most common Metplas configuration for panel-mounted D Sub connectors. If you are searching for a C88E2xxxx part number, this is the product page.

Metplas 45° Screw-Together & OS-DTPMK Series

The general Metplas screw-together 45° range covers DE-9 through DD-50 sizes (£1.25–£2.02) as a cost-effective Metplas alternative to the Northern Technologies branded series. The OS-DTPMK series is the straight-entry screw-together Metplas equivalent, covering the same size range at the same price point, functionally equivalent to the C88E3 series but from a different production line.

Metplas hoods are constructed from high-quality, impact-resistant plastic. This Metplas hood material offers a balance of durability and lightweight handling, ideal for a wide range of data and signal applications. The plastic Sub D construction is designed for consistent performance and long-term reliability.

While primarily designed for indoor use, some models may be used in sheltered outdoor environments. If you’re planning outdoor use for a Metplas hood, ensure the enclosure is protected from direct weather exposure. For robust Sub D hoods for outdoor projects, always verify the environmental rating of the full assembly.

Metplas hood installation is straightforward. Most designs feature snap-fit or clip-on assemblies with optional strain relief features. To install a plastic D Sub hood, align the connector, feed the cable through the exit and secure the screws. Always check for correct cable orientation before final tightening.

Yes. While plastic hoods generally offer limited EMI protection, shielded plastic D Sub hoods from Metplas are available with internal grounding options or metallised interiors. These provide enhanced Metplas hood shielding for applications requiring signal integrity.

Connector compatibility with Metplas hoods spans the full standard range. No matter the project scale, these hoods are designed to support the most common Sub D sizes, ensuring a proper mechanical and electrical fit.

Metplas hoods are made from ABS thermoplastic with a conductive copper-over-nickel electroless plating on the interior surfaces. This metallised coating makes the hood interior electrically conductive, providing EMI/RFI shielding as a standard feature, not an optional addition. The shielding performance is comparable to zinc alloy metal hoods in most commercial and industrial applications, at lower material cost and lighter weight. Metplas is not plain plastic; the metallised coating is the defining feature of the material and the reason it is specified instead of uncoated plastic hoods wherever EMI shielding is needed.
Choose Metplas when EMI/RFI shielding is required but a full metal construction is not mandated by the application specification, which covers the majority of commercial electronics, industrial automation, and broadcast applications. Choose metal when the specification explicitly requires metal backshell construction (common in aerospace, military, and some defence applications), or in high-mechanical-abuse environments where the plastic body could be damaged. Choose plain plastic only when no shielding is required and cost is the primary consideration. Metplas is the most cost-effective shielded option for standard applications and represents the largest proportion of D Sub hood sales in the UK market.
Northern Technologies uses the C88E prefix for two distinct product families. C88E2 series (e.g. C88E2xxxxx) are 45° Metplas hoods — these are on this page. C88E3 series (e.g. C88E300000, C88E340000, C88E3xxxxx) are straight-entry Metplas hoods — also on this page. C88E000 series (e.g. C88E000207, C88E000209, C88E000211) are straight-entry metal (zinc alloy) hoods — these are on our Metal Sub D Hoods page. If you have a specific part number starting with C88E3 or C88E2, you are in the right place. If your part number starts with C88E000, navigate to the Metal page.
